Early Elementary
6 - 9 years
“The aim of a Montessori Education is to foster autonomous, competent, responsible, adaptive citizens who are life-long learners and problem-solvers.”
Montessori Education Key Concepts and Practices, 1990
The Early Elementary classroom consist of six to nine year old students working together in an environment specifically prepared for them. As in Children’s House, the self-correcting Montessori materials captivate the child’s attention and serve as an aid to abstraction.
The backbone of the Early Elementary program is the Great Lessons, stories that span time from the origins of the universe to the rise of civilizations. The Great Lessons include Creation, The Timeline of Life, The Timeline of Humans, They History of Writing and The History of Numbers. Using impressionistic charts and timelines, these stories spark the child’s imagination, inspiring awe and a deep sense of respect for the gifts God has given to us.
At the center of the classroom is the Good Shepherd Catechesis, a Montessori-based method of religious formation. This approach brings to the child the essence of their Catholic faith in a developmentally appropriate way that speaks to the heart of the child.
