The Montessori Elementary at Peaceful Children Montessori School is a self-directed class. Children work on academic projects individually and at their own pace. The diverse Montessori curriculum emphasizes interrelationships of history, biology, geography, language and math. Children develop a love for language by expressing their thoughts through creative writing, a classroom newspaper and original plays. Editing, spelling, grammar and vocabulary are reinforced individually and in small group lessons. Math is explored through the use of Montessori materials and traditional methods. Children work with fractions, decimals, squaring, cubing, ratio and proportion using hands-on materials. Geometry is also logically presented by using metal insets, constructive triangles, area and volume materials. The directress acts as a guide, providing both structure and time for longer projects. Children do many research projects beginning with the Geological Timeline of Life, the Timeline of Humans, through the Great Civilizations. Information comes from many different reference books as well as the Internet. Completed projects may be beautifully hand-written or typed on laptop computers. Oral presentations help develop both composure and self-esteem.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd provides the framework for religious formation in the Elementary classroom. Children explore both the Bible and liturgy in a deeply personal way as they begin to see how they fit into God’s plan. They are given the opportunity to appreciate the gifts that have been entrusted to them as they explore salvation history through the Bible. Children in the Elementary class are also acutely aware of how this applies to their lives. They enjoy sharing their thoughts with one another, planning prayer services and expressing themselves through art and reflective writing. Weekly masses are enhanced by the student choir.
Students go on many outings to the Natural History Museum, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, Red Oak Camp and the Holden Arboretum. We annually stage a Science Fair, giving the opportunity to explore individual interests in the fields of science and engineering. Physical education ranges from traditional games to golf, kayaking and cross country skiing arranged through Lake Metroparks. Students explore drama by participating in an annual school play. The elementary child relishes performances, from student-produced small skits to operettas such as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance.” At Peaceful Children Montessori, the whole child is nurtured both spiritually and academically.
