Foreign Language
Foreign language instruction in Spanish begins at age three in Children’s House and continues throughout the Elementary programs. This early start takes advantage of the child’s developmental readiness for learning language. Research also suggests that children who study a second language perform at a higher level in verbal, math and logic tasks than do children who learn only one language.
Middle School students are able to choose among six languages to study, using the Rosetta Stone© program. This computer-based program of language instruction is compatible with the Montessori focus on independent learning. We have found that its emphasis on fluency and practical applications creates and sustains student interest. We believe this program provides a solid foundation for our students as they progress to their high school foreign language requirement.
Music
All of our students have the opportunity to learn about the history, creation and performance of music. In Children’s House, students are taught an appreciation for music using the Dalcroze method. With this method, children listen to the rhythm of a music piece and are then given the opportunity to express that rhythm through movement. Children’s House students also explore different types of percussion instruments and delight in learning and performing songs.
At the Elementary le
vels students begin to learn to read and notate music. They practice these skills by learning to play the recorder. Older students build and learn to play their own dulcimers. Through the Music Alliance and Music Man Inc. programs, we have been able to provide opportunities for students to learn to play a band instrument and to perform as an Ensemble for our school community, families and friends.
Middle School students take their understanding of music to a deeper level by learning aspects of music theory and history. Additionally, they receive voice coaching as they plan and rehearse the Middle School musical.
Drama
Each spring the Middle School produces a play; in alternate years the play is a musical. Play options are reviewed and selected by the students. They actively participate in the design and production of scenery and costumes. Upper Elementary students have the option of playing supporting roles either as cast members or by lending production assistance. The play is always great fun for performers and audience alike. More importantly, it is an opportunity for our Middle School students to demonstrate their confidence, poise and ability to work as a team.
Art & Design
There are many opportunities for our students to express their artistic vision. A varied mix of media is made available for a broad range of projects. Students are encouraged to experiment and to develop their own artistic style. Each year collaborative artistic works of each class are placed on auction at our major fundraising events. These items consistently draw the most interest….and the highest bids!
Physical Education
Physical education features recreational programming in conjunction with Lake Metroparks including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, golf, kayaking and other team-building exercises. Additionally, we engage students in various physical activities designed to improve balance, coordination and cardiovascular fitness.Yoga has been introduced as a means of
teaching relaxation and meditative movement.
