Upper Elementary
In the Upper Elementary classroom students build on the content of the Lower Elementary curriculum, exploring new ways to learn about the world around them. They are given ample opportunities to research and gain a deeper understanding of topics they find particularly interesting. Outings to area cultural institutions provide exposure to the larger community. Explorations of these places provide context and inspiration for the student’s research.
Students learn the many ways in which they can express themselves and gain an appreciation for the expertise and experiences of others. While independent learning is encouraged, Upper Elementary provides more opportunities for collaborative study. Time management, organization and goal setting skills are also developed.
“Children learn best by doing, and they do best when learning about something in which they are personally interested. We teach best by striking the imagination with a dynamic presentation of a topic, stirring the child’s desire to know more, and then stepping back to allow the child the freedom to do the research.”
